New Delhi: According to a gazette notification, the salary, allowances, and pension of Members of Parliament (MPs) have been raised with effect from April 1, 2023. This announcement is part of the continuing budget session of Parliament, updating the salary revision exercise of 2018.
The salary of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will be raised to Rs 1.24 lakh every month as against the existing Rs 1 lakh. It was also increased to Rs 2,500 from Rs 2,000 as daily allowance. A former MP's pension also gets an upward hike, which now will be Rs 31,000 per month instead of Rs 25,000.
A significant change regarding extra pension for MPs with the service above five years has been increased to Rs 2,500 from Rs 2,000 per year of service. The rise was due to the need to adjust salaries to inflation and rising cost of living, which has been the primary reason behind the last salary revision in 2018.
Other allowances enjoyed by MPs include constituency allowance Rs 70,000, office expenses Rs 60,000, as well as 34 free domestic flights and first-class train travel for professional or personal usage. In addition, electricity, water, and rent-free accommodation in New Delhi will be provided during the whole five-year tenure.
There is always an increase in the salaries and allowances of MPs so that the functions are carried out in the office, and the members can live at a standard of living compatible with the ever-increasing costs of governance.
